Executive Function and Processing Speed in Children Living with Sickle Cell Anemia

چکیده
Executive function and processing speed difficulties are observed in children living with sickle cell anemia (SCA). The influence of on executive is not well understood. We recruited 59 SCA 24 matched controls aged 8–18 years between 2010 2016 from clinics the UK. Children completed tests cognitive flexibility, subdomains function. MRI scans were conducted within one year testing; oxygen saturation was obtained day testing. Hemoglobin levels medical records. Caregivers questionnaire. Hierarchical linear regressions found that hemoglobin, saturation, age, infarct status, independent predictors for any model. However, all flexibility tests, there a significant interaction status speed; without silent cerebral infarction (SCI) faster had better flexibility. Our findings indicate that, when interpreting difficulties, it important to account relationship SCI speed. More research needed elucidate mechanisms, but clinically, including testing as part clinic visits by embedding psychologists healthcare team would appear be critical step.

Precursors of Executive Function in Infants With Sickle Cell Anemia
Executive dysfunction occurs in sickle cell anemia, but there are few early data. Infants with sickle cell anemia (n = 14) and controls (n = 14) performed the "A-not-B" and Object Retrieval search tasks, measuring precursors of executive function at 9 and 12 months. Significant group differences were not found. However, for the A-not-B task, 7 of 11 sickle cell anemia infants scored in the lowe...

Background: Blood pressure in patients with sickle cell anemia (SCA) is influenced by autonomic cardiovascular dysfunction, endocrinopathies, nephropathy and nutritional factors. We aimed to evaluate systemic and diastolic blood pressure and its severity among children and adolescents with SCA and determine its association with clinical and hematological variables. Methods: This case-control s...
متن کاملSide Effects of Hydroxyurea in Patients with Sickle Cell Anemia
Background: Hemoglobin S arises is the result of a point mutation (A-T) in the sixth codon on the -globin gene on chromosome 11 causing sickle cell anemia. The presence of fetal hemoglobin in infancy plays a relatively protective role for vaso-occlusive symptoms that are the major contributor for the morbidity and mortality among patients with sickle cell anemia. hydroxyurea, an s-phase-specif...
متن کاملProcessing speed and executive abilities in children with phenylketonuria.
OBJECTIVE Phenylketonuria (PKU) is a hereditary metabolic disorder that often results in neuropsychological impairment, even in individuals treated early and continuously. This study was conducted to examine processing speed, variability in processing speed, and the relationship between processing speed variables and executive abilities in children with early and continuously treated PKU. MET...
